FIVE EYES

FIVE EYES

In Hans’ old mill his three black cats
Watch the bins for the thieving rats.
Whisker and claw, they crouch in the night,
Their five eyes smouldering green and bright:
Squeaks from the flour sacks, squeaks from where
The cold wind stirs on the empty stair,
Squeaking and scampering, everywhere.
Then down they pounce, now in, now out,
At whisking tail, and sniffing snout;
While lean old Hans he snores away
Till peep of light at break of day;
Then up he climbs to his creaking mill,
Out come his cats all grey with meal -
Jekkel, and Jessup, and one-eyed Jill.

HAIKU

The haiku is a Japanese form of poem consisting of only 17 syllables arranged in 3 lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables each. It should express a single idea powerfully. One of the greatest exponents of the art of haiku was Matsuo Basho who lived in the eighteenth century. There are presently two haiku societies in the UK and a history of haiku has been written.
  Haiku

A verse of three lines
Five, seven, five syllables
Sharing a good thought.

  Tree

Tree sheds leaves of fire
shakes and shivers through winter
prays for new green cloak.

Japanese character for “tree”
AK
  Sheep

Sheep in frosted field
graze iced grass, wool-protected,
warm, but not secure.

Teapot

Stands dutifully,
hears joy and sadness and life,
then bows and pours balm.

A K                 A K
  Deep down in the earth
is a sprout of life fighting
to beat the winter.
In a jail of frost
sits a seed waiting, waiting
for its freedom.

  A star speckled cloak
is pulled over the whole world
swallowing all light.
She slips through alleys
A dark, doomed, silent figure
In smothering black.
