We all know children love poetry. They love the sounds, the rhythm, the repetition, the images, the humour, the stories, the mystery of what some of it means. The Literacy Hour has brought poetry back to primary schools but not always with a real sense of enjoyment. It sometimes seems to be more about targets to cover than the pleasure which poems can offer.

The poems in our anthologies are real gems to be enjoyed. They are guaranteed to appeal to children. The books are ideal for use in group or class sessions and will give children a varied selection to appreciate and discuss – great, too, for speaking and listening.

Why not give your class some real poetry books to read instead of photocopied sheets all the time? Look at our special prices for sets of 6 and 16. And don’t forget the notes which go with the anthologies.

If on the other hand you want a brilliant selection to use on the Interactive Whiteboard look at our Key Stage 2 Poetry Pack. It’s full of great poems and is perfect for bringing lively poetry to the Literacy Hour.

Tell your class about the Children’s Page. They might like to send in a poem.

Poetry Notes

These supporting notes can be used by the class teacher to help with shared or guided reading sessions. They are also ideal for classroom assistants or parents to refer to when working with groups of children during literacy sessions. In addition, because they deliberately address the children themselves in a readable style they will enable the poems to be read in small groups with minimal supervision.

Notes for Parents

These notes are ideal for parents and children to use. They are not intended to replace each person's own response to the poems but simply to offer some ideas and suggestions. If they are used informally and in a relaxed way they will add to the enjoyment and pleasure the poems will bring.

The notes cover all four books in the series 'Quercus poems for Children'. They have been written by Alan Kerr, an experienced teacher of the primary age group with an extensive knowledge of children's poetry.
