20/5/21 to Peter Bone

Can't agree. Peter, with your recent comment on radio that Johnson doing a good job. Tragically he has failed in his 1st duty - to protect lives. In allowing over 150,000 people to die the govt, MPs and all of us have let ourselves down badly.

Common sense surely, given level of infections in UK and fact that virus out of control globally, NOT to lift restrictions until all adults vaccinated.

Plus closed border and no foreign travel for anyone unless a personal emergency.

Plus maximum effort, no excuses, to ensure most countries have capacity to produce their own vaccines within next 3 months.

31/5/21

Right to have had a staged unlocking but not sensible to have put dates on it. Right wing media and others have hyped up freedom day etc. Nothing special about 21 June. We can surely wait a few more weeks.

FAO: Steve Brine, MP

Copies to various parties

7/6/21

Dear Steve

I very much support your views on not cutting the overseas aid budget – excellent.

But I’m afraid I strongly disagree with other views you expressed recently on the Westminster Hour.

The reason why we have endured such a long lockdown is because the government has failed to understand that saving lives must always be its top priority and tragically this has not been the case. If the strategy had been to go for virtual elimination of the virus rather than learning to live with it tens of thousands of lives would have been saved and much of normal economic and social life would have returned by now.  Virtual elimination is still the only strategy which will make the UK and the whole world secure and it is made possible with the vaccination rollout. I urge you and others to reconsider your position on this.

The countries which have kept deaths to a minimum have been those which been fully focussed on elimination – New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, China and Australia about which you were wrongly dismissive. Not only have they protected the lives of their citizens a more normal life with few restrictions has been restored. Nor have these countries become globally isolated in terms of trade even if their borders may not be open to non-essential travel.

As for localised lockdowns in Melbourne and elsewhere they have certainly been disruptive but have proved to be highly effective. It is essential they become part of the elimination strategy in the UK along with surge testing and tracing.

On the easing of restrictions on 21 June we must be extremely cautious. Too many people have not yet had both vaccinations, infections are rising far too rapidly especially amongst the young, and there are too many uncertainties about the Delta and other variants.

Your desire to improve the lives of people in poorer countries shows you have a caring and compassionate nature and I hope you will perhaps be able to reflect on how best this can used to protect the lives and well-being of the citizens in our own country and globally.

Yours sincerely

9/6/21

Those who say we have to learn to live with virus are 1000% WRONG. It’s a view that has caused tens of thousands of deaths in UK. Other countries took opposite view and have kept deaths to a minimum. With vaccines and testing we can now aim for VIRTUAL ELIMINATION.

9/6/21

21 June is not freedom day for the 150,000 people in UK who have lost their ultimate freedom.

10/6/21

How can we have faith in leaders of G7 when they have mostly led their countries so disastrously during pandemic resulting in 100s of 1000s of avoidable deaths? Horrific carnage, unimaginable tragedy.

THEY MUST ATONE BY RESOLVING TO RID WORLD OF COVID BY END OF 2021.

10/6/21

Hope G7 leaders and others will listen to, and learn from, PMs of Australia and S Korea. Unlike G7 nations which have suffered horrific carnage and unimaginable tragedy, both countries have kept deaths to a minimum by adopting an elimination and lives first strategy.

Unforgivable moral failure also, Gordon, for global leaders to have allowed 4 miilion people to have died from Covid. Sadly, though, an unsurprising political failure.

21/4/21

Dear John

I bear no malice towards the government or our politicians in general but your management of the pandemic has been an appalling, and unimaginably tragic, disaster. You are our servants and you have let us down badly.

It is not with the benefit of hindsight that I say this as you may remember it is over a year ago that I was urging a much more proactive approach with tighter restrictions and even the wearing of masks.

Nothing can compensate for the suffering of those who have lost their lives and the anguish of their loved ones but those in positions of authority must do 3 things. They must learn from their mistakes, they must consider their positions and they must do everything in their power to eliminate the virus in this country and globally. Saying we will have to live with Covid will only add to the carnage and will be a rerun of our past failure.

I urge you, in all humility, to act on the advice of those of us who have advocated this approach from the start. It is absolutely the only way forward.

Copy of my comment to PM for your information

Well done, Boris.

Absolutely the right decision to delay unlocking.

Still strongly disagree with you about learning to live with the virus and not sure exactly what this means in practice.

By far the best way forward is to aim for virtual elimination - as some of us have argued from the beginning. It's the only strategy that will get things back to normal for the UK and the rest of the world.

With the vaccines and test and trace it is easily within the realms of possibility. But, of course, it will also require determination, discipline and kindness from everyone.

Hope you managed to discuss dealing with Covid with Scott Morrison at G7 summit.  Australia kept their death toll to a minimum by going for elimination.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/covid_carnage_avoidable.html

17/6/21

We must not allow ourselves to be brainwashed by those saying we should live with the virus. This is totally wrong and has brought carnage to UK and globally. With vaccines, test and trace, and self-discipline we must aim for virtual elimination, not control or suppression.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/covid_carnage_avoidable.html

17/6/21 Redwood

We all need to think carefully before we use the words freedom or freedom day. Sadly over 150,000 people have lost the most basic freedom of all.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/covid_carnage_avoidable.html

26/6/21

Hancock and whole govt should be replaced – not for personal misdemeanours but for failing to prevent the disastrous & avoidable tragedy here in UK. Well over 150,000 deaths. Compare with Australia, NZ, Vietnam etc

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/covid_carnage_avoidable.html

26/6/21

Agree - but we have become complacent - and casual, relaxed and for too many lacking in discipline.

Govt must send out very strong messages about dangers still present rather than saying life will soon be back to normal.

27/6/21

It must always be lives first, Sajid. Which means going for virtual elimination of the virus not learning to live with it. Hancock’s unimaginably appalling and tragic legacy is 150 000 lost lives.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/covid_carnage_avoidable.html

27/6/21

Not yet clear that vaccines have broken link between virus and mortalities as much as we hoped for. Plus too many people not vaccinated. These are 2 reasons SJ should not relax restrictions further at present and urge much greater caution

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/covid_carnage_avoidable.html

SJ must not listen to siren voices arguing we must learn to live with virus. We need a change of strategy which means going for virtual elimination - not difficult to do if we are determined enough. Hancock’s tragic legacy is 150 000 lost lives.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/covid_carnage_avoidable.html

28/6/21

Vaccines are not proving to be as fully effective against Covid as we hoped so everyone still needs to be realistic, patient and extremely cautious. Only way to beat virus is to virtually eliminate it NOT learn to live with it. Not difficult to do if we are determined enough.

29/6/21

@BBCr4today

Comparing living with the virus without restrictions to driving cautiously is a huge false analogy. Our behaviour on the roads is underpinned by traffic acts and the Highway Code which cover speed limits, traffic lights, seat belts, driving tests etc etc.

2/7/21

Boris – the only way to ensure life returns to more or less normal is to go for virtual elimination of the virus not to learn to live with it. This will not be difficult to achieve with the vaccine rollout and test and trace. But what is now also urgently required is absolutely impeccable behaviour in households, among friends, in pubs and cafes, and at sporting occasions. The reason the virus is out of control yet again is not because of its intrinsically more transmissible characteristcs but because too many people are far too relaxed and casual about it  - and some have no discipline at all.

We need very, very firm messages about the need for cautious behaviour, from everyone in the government, from all MPs to their constituents, from Whitty and co, and from as many respected public figures as possible.

We must immediately disabuse people that the crisis is over and that they can return to life as it was before. It is not over in the UK nor globally however much we would like it to be.

Hoping you can read the copy of my letter to Sajid Javid that I sent to your H of C email address.

Best wishes

Agree with Kim that we need unity. Best way to achieve this is to abandon our immature system of tribal politics and our outdated tribal allegiances. See Governance in Quercus Manifesto:

Hope you’ll think again, Sajid. If restrictions are relaxed it will be the FIFTH TIME the government has made the same mistake with unimaginably tragic consequences. Don’t listen to siren voices who say we can’t get rid of virus – we can and other countries have.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/thoughts_on_61_-_65.html

You say you want to be honest with people about the virus, Sajid. Honesty would include admitting the government’s strategy has been a tragic disaster and resulted in at least 150 000 avoidable deaths, probably closer to quarter of a million. https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/thoughts_on_61_-_65.html

You want to rely on people being sensible and responsible rather than telling them what to do. We all want that but looking at the behaviour of some football fans doesn’t fill me with confidence it will happen.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/thoughts_on_61_-_65.html

I thought the job of the Health Secretary was to protect peope’s lives not to worry about the economy – which will be fine despite Covid.

Projected annual Covid deaths very soon: 32,760

I thought the government was trying to learn from the past and yet this is the 5th time Covid is out of control.

Present Covid situation definitely doesn’t meet 3rd test for relaxing restrictions and probably not 2nd.

Is this what learning to live with the virus means:

Annual Covid deaths now 10,950

Projected annual Covid deaths very soon 32,850

Not computer modelling but simple arithmetic based on current infections and deaths.

18/7/21

Dear Prime Minister

Lifting restrictions must be delayed. Your first duty, which is both political and moral, is to protect the lives of UK citizens. Pretending that life will get back to normal any time soon is gambling recklessly with lives.

The virus is completely out of control for the fifth time at the moment and your strategy of allowing 200 people a day to die from it is horrific and grotesque – 73,000 deaths per year.

As many are saying the only way life will return to normal here and globally is to pursue a policy of virtual elimination – nanocovid as I call it. This is not difficult to achieve as I have outlined previously.

I urge you to join those of us who wish to defeat the virus not surrender to it.

https://www.quercuspublications.co.uk/how_to_destroy_the_virus.html

Must have an emergency debate in parlt re lifting restrictions. Yet again complete insanity - allowing 200 deaths a day, acc to Whitty, ie 73,000 a year, as the price for living with the virus is grotesque.

#nanocovid

24/7/21 reply to Camilla Tominey

Drivel, and, sadly, poison, too. Not self-destructive to chase down virus to virtual elimination. Aust and N Zealand certainly not self-harming - have friends & relatives there. Just compare their minimal death toll with our carnage - over 153,000 lives lost.

25/7/21

Australia & N Z have clearly not failed in their virtual elimination strategy; it never has been zero covid. UK has suffered unimaginable carnage,153,000 deaths, with all the anguish this has brought. Death toll in Aust; 915; NZ: 26

Mindless, totally biased criticism

Excellent that you've been working on a Covid ward, Chris - very well done, and thank you.

You must now persuade the govt to be much, much stronger in its messaging re vaccine, and much, much stronger in its messaging re caution and discipline generally.

Obviously we are all pleased about these stats. But tragically in reality 153,000 lives have been lost, most of them avoidably, because of govt failure. An unimaginable scale of anguish for victims and loved ones.

And death toll still mounts and you are doing nothing about it.

Unbelievably foolish, immature and uncaring for Tory MPs not to be wearing masks in Afgh debate.  It’s this sort of behaviour that has led to virus being totally out of control again with massive infections and horrific death toll.

Can't agree with presenter last night who said things are really quite good on Covid front. Sadly things are appalling - virus is out of control again with massive number of infections and horrific death toll.

BBC presenters must stop reinforcing seriously mistaken belief that we have to learn to live with the virus – at a cost of over 100 deaths a day across all ages, ie over 36,500 a year. BBC has a duty to present unbiased opinion not do what govt wants.

Brilliant that Jacinda Ardern is continuing her elimination strategy. Tragic for 150,000 people who died from Covid that UK did not do the same. She is an example for the world to follow.

Utterly apalling that some MPs can support Johnson and Javid in letting the virus rip and normalising AN ANNUAL DEATH RATE FROM COVID of 40,000 a year. Over 150,000 deaths in UK so far, vast majority avoidable. Carnage must stop now.

Afg disastrous but dwarfed by anguish of pandemic. In UK failure of govt has led to needless deaths of 150,000+ innocent people. Stupidity of relaxing restrictions now killing 800 a week, over 40,000 a year. Horrific.

Govt must change course NOW.

Williamson talks a lot about using common sense but sadly this is non-existent in our govt. Utter stupidity of lifting restrictions now killing 800 a week, over 40,000 a year.

More than common sense to restore sensible restrictions now.

Re mess at Reading festival

This sort of behaviour of course is why we've needed much more self-discipline in dealing with Covid - not constantly bleating about loss of liberty as Telegraph and others have done.

Sensible restrictions must be restored now,

It sounds as if Swinney has given up like Johnson and Javid. Waved the white flag in surrender. All the more reason for the rest of us to keep fighting to win.
